The In Betweens

You know the moments. The small, yet mighty ones we encounter daily. The feel of fresh sheets before bed. The deep conversations you have with your nail artist. The long sighs your dog makes after a full day. These are the moments we rarely talk about, yet they are so impactful.

When we allow ourselves to pause and take in these simple experiences, we begin to notice what truly fuels our creative fire. Finding meaning in the mundane offers a shift in perspective and an opportunity to transform everyday moments into art.

My ten-month-old son is fascinated by everything around him. He has recently discovered the magic of his hands and oftentimes will stop to turn them back and forth as he analyzes the movements that he makes with them. He makes scritchy scratchy sounds against his blanket, using his fingers to feel different textures. These seemingly normal behaviours remind me that he’s seeing everything for the very first time, and a curious mind is what’s shaping his view of the world.

It’s the same kind of curiosity you see when a child brings you a painting of a blob and tells you it’s a unicorn dancing in a cloud. They create and respond not because they’re trying to produce something “good,” but because it’s their natural response to wonder.

We tend to lose this instinct to wonder as we grow older. At its core, creativity is not a product. It’s a process of noticing, feeling, interpreting, and expressing.

So, is creativity only about perspective?

Maybe not only, but perspective is where it begins. In a world driven by overstimulation and productivity, the in-between moments give us pause. They slow us down. They remind us that we are, in many ways, a collection of small moments stitched together into something meaningful.

Next time you feel stuck, uninspired, or disconnected, don’t look further. Look closer. Reflect on an in-between moment and let it guide you back to yourself.
